The Big North Shore Waterfall Adventure
Once you start chasing waterfalls on the North Shore, it’s almost impossible to stop. Luckily, that’s not a problem — because if you’re staying at North Shore Camping Co., some of the best and wildest falls are just a little farther up the shore, perfect for a half-day road trip (with plenty of snack breaks and photo stops along the way).

First on your list: Illgen Falls. Don’t blink or you’ll drive right past — but pull over and you’ll find the Baptism River squeezing through a rocky gorge before dropping with a satisfying roar into a deep, swirling pool. It’s dramatic, powerful, and often blissfully quiet, so you can linger and just listen to the water do its thing.

Next up is Caribou Falls, one of the most beautiful waterfall hikes on the whole North Shore. The trail winds through dense forest along the river, with glimpses of rushing water through the trees. Just when you’re starting to wonder if you missed it, a set of wooden stairs leads you down into a rocky basin where the falls tumble over sheer cliffs into a crystal-clear pool. It’s the kind of spot you’ll want to sit and soak up for a while, especially if you catch it in the early morning light.

Keep driving north and you’ll hit Temperance River State Park, home to the Temperance River Gorge. Here, the river slices through ancient volcanic rock, creating a deep, narrow canyon that looks almost otherworldly. The trails offer a series of dramatic overlooks and narrow bridges, with the water thundering below and Lake Superior just beyond. If you like your hikes with a little adrenaline and a lot of wow factor, this is your place.

Don’t miss Cascade River State Park — a true North Shore classic. The Cascade River lives up to its name, tumbling and leaping over a series of rocky drops before finally relaxing ait meets Lake Superior. The main trail follows the river, giving you a front-row seat to a whole series of waterfalls and rapids, each one a little different from the last. It’s wild, it’s beautiful, and the mossy, cedar-scented air makes it feel like you’ve stumbled into another world.

After a day spent scrambling over rocks, hiking forest trails, and letting the mist settle in your hair, you’ll be more than ready for a campfire and some well-earned food back at North Shore Camping Co. There’s nothing quite like swapping waterfall stories under the stars, pizza in hand, and knowing you squeezed every last drop of adventure out of your day.

The best part? Tomorrow, you get to do it all over again – or not. Hang out at camp – agate hunt on the beach at Cove Point Lodge -or sauna, soak, swim…it’s all up to you!
